Hi, my name is Whitney and I’m addicted to making stuff. Food, clothes, crafts… I can’t get enough. It’s always a little dangerous when I head down a new artistic path, because it generally leads to hoarding supplies and I live in 750 square feet and no walls. My roommate is very patient and, luckily, thinks most of the stuff I make is fairly neat.
Last night I dove head first into the world of knitting. I thought I’d learned some basics back when I was a kid… whatever I thought I knew, well, I was wrong. Luckily, there were two of us learning, and two veteran knitters. Obviously, we couldn’t craft without some good food and drink – wine, martinis, pâté, hummus, olives, roasted garlic, cookies, meats, cheeses, crackers – ok, maybe knitting club is a thinly veiled cover for “We like to eat rich food and drink with with friends… let’s add a craft and make it legit!” You know you’re jealous. You know you have good friends when, the moment you walk in, the first words out of her mouth is “I HAVE THE PERFECT WINE GLASS FOR YOU!” Well honey, any glass that holds wine is fine with me, but don’t let me stop you from providing the most perfect drinking vessel. She came back with this giant goblet that held far more wine than it would appear. I made it a rule that each refill had to be back up to the line!
Oh, knitting. Right.
I learned words like “casting on” and “skein” and “chain stitch” and am still curious about thinks like “purl” (I just googled the spelling) and “lace knitting” and so many other knitting things that sounded like Greek last night.
Cookie the Cat was unimpressed that there was pâté and wine she wasn’t invited to eat, and that no one wanted to give her their undivided attention. (Except when we tried to play with yarn, then she was unimpressed with our feeble attempts to entertain her.) It had been a while since I was around cats, and Cookie amused me. For about 5 minutes, I thought I needed one, but then I remember than generally, as a species, they hate me. Really, I’m lucky I escaped the night without any deliberately malicious acts by the feline resident. She was very endearing.
Unfortunately, I didn’t realize how many skeins of yarn were needed for a full size scarf. I got home and finished out the ball I had, and this was the result. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime – I’ll have more to work with Monday!
