Ikea Photo Ledge = Kitchen Storage Solutions

Despite the fact that we’re allegedly getting snow this week, Spring is here and the urge to clean and organize is in full force.  Actually, when you live in 700 square feet with two other heartbeats, the urge to clean and organize is pretty much always present.  I was wandering Ikea (yes, I go there as often as it sounds) and trying to resolve a solution for my above-the-stove shelving I have for spices, oils, vinegars, etc.  I wanted to have a set up that kept the ingredients at a quick reach while cooking, but still looked aesthetically pleasing. I had used some tension mounted ledge shelves from Target, but they couldn’t support the weight, weren’t quite wide enough, and definitely weren’t long enough.  Good in theory, poor in execution.  These shelves changes my entire kitchen and cooking experience in 10 minutes.  At $9.99 they’re the right price and easily found in both black and white at an Ikea store near you. It’s worth noting that they do not come with the hardware for mounting, …

DIY: 2 Hour Closet Solution

As of just a few weeks ago, this was my closet. Or rather “clothes storage situation I’ve been living with” I’m not proud of it. Who would be? It’s terrible. I have a DVD shelf on the floor, and my clothes are hanging from a sprinkler pipe and stored in a see thru Ikea basket.   With Christmas ornaments. Like I said, I’m not proud.  First priority was getting my clothes off the sprinkler pipe (hangers don’t fit… and it’s  little ghetto). Second, I needed more storage.  (I’m not being unreasonable, that wasn’t enough space for anybody.) A trip to Home Depot and $25 solved my problems. I needed a closet bar and figured if I gave it enough support, it could be suspended. I’ve actually waited about six weeks since original installation to post this to be certain this would hold up.  Part 1: Supplies A closet bar, cut to length. Mine was about 90″. More than enough storage for someone 5’2″ with a bureau of clothing storage as well.  Some 1/4″ rope (I …

DIY Jewelry Wall

After a hunt on a couple different occasions this week for the right earrings, I had finally had it and decided I needed to get organized. Why have a fun and diverse jewelry collection if all you end up wearing is the same pair of silver earrings because the rest of it is too hard to find? This was the storage “solution” that I have been using for at least the last year and a half. The box my glasses came in and a little zipper bag I got for free when I rented a dress. I’m well aware this is a sad life for my sparkle. After pinning around 439 ideas on Pinterest, I took action and headed to the hardware store for some inspiration. After wandering around for about 20 minutes, I came back with the following: 1 8″x36″ Shelf 2 pks large brass hooks (4 total) 2 pks medium brass hooks (10 total) 5 pks small brass hooks (30 total) After confirming that the shelf would fit in the spot I had …
