Marathon: Week 5-9

A bit of housekeeping, if I may.  I am indeed still running. And cooking and sewing and blogging (in my head). However as you can see from the running calendar, life has gotten in the way of running, cooking, and putting the inner monologue blogs into words – in the best way possible.  The last few weeks for your favorite ginger included a proposal (eeek!), the concert of the summer (I ❤ you JT), a week long jaunt through Europe exploring Iceland,  London, and Paris, and somewhere in there, even a few long runs. I’m still processing everything. It really is a lot to take in. There will be more to come (lots more!) on all of the above. For now the only thing I really know how to recap is where I’m at in this training program. I knew when I started this, I would need some “off” weeks.  It was a good call to build them in, because they have come in handy. Two weeks off in a row from long runs was unnerving, and I …

Marathon: Week 4

To say this week wasn’t a struggle would be an absolute lie. It was hot. It was humid. I missed a midweek run. I had one of the most painful 3 mile slogs of my entire life. I questioned more than once… ‘Why the hell I’m doing this?!‘ I can’t say I feel 100% optimistic again, but there’s always something empowering about finishing the long weekend run, reminding you that this is not impossible. It’s hard because it’s supposed to be. If this shit was easy everyone would do it. Sunday’s 8 mile LR was surprisingly successful given the fact that I decided to throw in a whole bunch of new factors at once, breaking one of the most fundamental rules of running. I wore shoes I’m still breaking in and carried hydration for the first time (save for an incident with a water belt last year that really didn’t go so well) all while continuing to adjust to running without tunes. The shoes are improving, but I have a wonderful blister that has formed …

I’m Running A Marathon

There. I said it. Isn’t that just about the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard? Well, be prepared to hear a lot more, because in addition to foodie goodness you’re about to get hit with some weekly running updates as I train. Approximately 18.5 weeks from now I’ll be questioning my better judgement, along with two of my dear girlfriends, at the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, DC. I’m a goal oriented person, so here you go. Once in writing on the internet these officially become part of my permanent record. Let’s see what that does for my accountability. Complete my training. I’ve already built in 3 weeks of buffers in case of injury, travel or I’m-Just-Not-Running-This-Week-Goddamnit attitudes. I WILL complete the mileage. Someway, somehow. Finish. No seriously, that’s my only goal for the running aspect of this race. I have a weak mind at the end of 10+ miles. If I don’t say “F*ck it all” at mile 22 (or 11), that’s a win. Stay injury free. If you know me, this will be the …
